The International Centre on Child Labour and Education (ICCLE), the Education For All - Fast Track Initiative and the International Labour Organization (ILO) organized a panel discussion in Washington, DC, on June 12th to address this year’s theme, ‘Education - The right response to child labor’. This corresponds to our philosophy and position on child labor: Ending the economic exploitation of children can be achieved only when free, compulsory and quality education is ensured for all children. Abandoning child labor and achieving Education for All are two sides of the same coin. One cannot be achieved without the other.

According to ILO estimates, there are over 200 million child laborers in the world between 5 and 17 years old. Approximately 165 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are missing out on school to work often long hours in dangerous conditions. Many poor families are unable to afford school fees or related costs in absence of social protection.
There is an urgent need to focus efforts on the remaining 15-25% of children out of school, and recognize child labor as the largest barrier to achieving Education for All (EFA) by 2015.
Out-of-school children are the most vulnerable to trafficking for labor and commercial sexual exploitation. The national plans on EFA must identify who are these out-of-school children, what are they doing, what are their special needs, and what special mechanisms are required to ensure that they can attend full time school and receive quality education.
This 12 June event included a discussion among panelists followed by a open discussion. The panelists covered ground on Government efforts in the Global South and North to confront this situation in our common endeavor to contribute to offering Education - The right response to child labor.

Letter from Mikalyna, 7th grader, Minnesota
My friends and I sold silicone bracelets for the cause against child labor outside a local strip mall where we had gained approval from the landlord. The bracelets we sold had the words, "Stop Abusive Child Labor" on one side and the acronym "SACL" on the other. We set up a table with pictures of the kids in Pakistan that you sent to us. We also had a poster explaining that it was World Day Against Child Labor and providing facts. We had SO many customers! We sold about 80 bracelets and we got a lot of donations. Many of the people who stopped by our table thought that we were doing such a nice thing for these kids, and they were very thankful. We ended up raising a total of $348 dollars! Our goal is to raise about $400, so we are going to continue selling them to our neighbors. It was a big hit, and all of our customers took this fundraiser seriously. When we complete our fundraising in the next day or two, we would like it to be used in support of school supplies, textbooks and a uniform to bring 1 child from brick kilns to school in Pakistan.
Sincerely,
Mikalyna
